Bangladesh lost four wickets in the final session before bad
light brought an early end to the day's play, reaching 158-4 at stumps on Day 3
of the first Test against India. Chasing a daunting target of 515 at the MA
Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the visitors face an uphill battle. |
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has been the standout performer with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 51 from 60 deliveries. He will resume play on Day 4 alongside Shakib Al Hasan, who is not out on five.
Ravichandran Ashwin was India's top performer with the ball,
taking three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with one.
Earlier in the day, centuries from Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill powered India to 287-4 before declaring, having resumed their second innings on 81-3.
Pant blazed his way to 109 off 128 balls, while Gill
remained unbeaten on 119 from 176 deliveries.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz dismissed Pant, the only Indian batter to
fall on the day, finishing with two wickets in the innings.
In response, Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman
Islam put together a 62-run partnership, but both squandered their starts,
departing for 33 and 35 respectively.
Shanto has been the anchor for Bangladesh, occasionally
taking on the Indian spinners and registering the team's first 50-plus score of
the Test.
However, with Bangladesh still trailing by 357 runs, only six wickets in hand, and two days left to play, an Indian victory appears inevitable.
