South Korean parliament votes to end martial law |
South Korea's parliament has rejected the president's
proposal to impose martial law, according to reports from Yonhap and Reuters.
Protesters gathered outside the National Assembly, chanting
slogans against martial law and demanding an end to the dictatorship.
Authorities deployed numerous patrol cars and riot police buses to maintain
order.
Earlier, leaders of the main opposition Democratic Party
urged lawmakers to convene outside the legislature. Yonhap reported on this
development, with the BBC's Jake Coyne providing additional coverage from
Seoul.
Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung called on citizens to join
the rally, while People's Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon condemned the
martial law proposal, describing it as a 'wrong' decision.
